Design is a Job - First Chapter Review

Design is a Job "...is a guide to making a living as a designer. It contains the fundamentals of being a working designer, including working with clients and others, valuing your work, and getting paid." (Monteiro, 2012)

After reading the first chapter of ‘Design is a job’, I felt that the author was disgruntled by individuals classed as creatives. “It’s time to stop being a creative and start becoming a designer” (Monteiro, 2012) Creatives are seen as magical beings where their creativeness comes from within. He explains that they use the idea of 'disturbing the creative process' as an excuse to be late or not attend meetings etc. Monteiro (2012) writes, “Nobody likes a co-worker who operates outside the rules. And this will make it harder for you to work with your team. It also makes life harder for other designers (like me) to do their jobs.

Throughout this chapter I feel as though Monteiro is warning the reader of how not to behave like in a creative workplace which makes sense considering the book "is a guide to make a living as a designer" (Monteiro, 2012).
