Wordpress.org VS Wordpress.com

When logging into Wordpress, I realised that I was logging into the incorrect Wordpress login portal as I was trying to log into Wordpress.com. Ramsay Safety Solutions uses Wordpress.org and I therefore wanted to look at the difference between both versions.

(Wpbeginner, 2019)

Wordpress.org
To access this version, you need to download Wordpress and install it on your own server. The hosting is provided by the user or an external company.
  • Hosting not provided by Wordpress, requires a separate web hosting.
  • Free to use as it is open-source.
  • Able to customise the back-end code.
  • Able to upload your own plugins and/or themes.
  • Uses a custom domain.
  • Requires more management and cost however has added functionality, flexability and allows the user to create a bespoke website.
  • More difficult for beginners to use.

Wordpress.com
  • Hosting is provided by Wordpress and doesn't require a web server.
  • Faster to set-up as you don't have to download Wordpress onto your system.
  • Requires a user to sign-up.
  • Free to use however requires you to upgrade to a monthly payment plan if you need to use more advanced/additional features.
  • Completely front-end based and therefore users do not have access to the back-end code.
  • Aren't able to upload your own plugins and/or themes.
  • Supplies you with a free subdomain on free plan but requires the user to upgrade to use their own custom domain.
  • Upgrade needed to access premuim themes.
  • Easy for beginners with no coding experience to use.
  • Limited disk space (3GB).
  • Unable to remove Wordpress.com advertisements or branding.
If the client wanted me to use Wordpress I would need to consider which version of Wordpress is appropriate for the client and whether I would need to be able to have more customisable features which wouldn't be included in the wordpress.com version. Considering my research, using Wordpress.com would not be the best option for Ramsay Safety Solutions Limited considering the site's purpose is to promote their services for their business. Wordpress.com seems to be more appropriate for a personal site or blog. However I will test creating Ramsay Safety Solutions' website using Wordpress.com to ensure that this version isn't as suitable.
