Pokémon GO & Let's Go! Comparison

Pokémon GO is a mobile augmented reality game created by Niantic. Similar to the earlier pokémon games, your aim is to become the best pokémon trainer by capturing pokémon and training them so that you can defeat other trainers and gym leaders.

Pokémon GO introduced a new catching style which allows you to catch pokémon by flicking a pokéball towards a pokémon that has been fouund on the map.

This is different to it's predecessors as originally this was completely using turn-based battling. To catch a pokémon, you needed to reduce their health points as low as possible by battling then attempt to use a pokéball to catch them. Pokémon GO's new catching style allows you catch pokémon more efficiently which is vital for a phone game. Battling friends is turn-based however when attempting to take over a gym the combat power of your pokémon needs to be high so that it can endure automated attacks and allow youu to attack powerfully by tapping.

Like VR, you are able to become fully emersed in the game as the real world has been augmented to include pokéstops and gyms on a real map. The addition of AR technology when catching pokémon makes this world a reality, as you are able to catch pokémon in the real world using your phone camera. To move your character, you have to move as this is based on geolocation and is another way of making this experiencee real for the user.

Pokémon: Let's Go! is similar to it's predecessors in terms of the graphics, towns, gym battles, routes and storyline. You can move freely in Pokémon: Let's Go! by using the thumbstick however in Pokémon GO! you have to walk in real life to move your character. This may be due to the fact that the switch game isn't intended to make you feel like you are part of a real world game and is more of a video game rather than an augmented reality game. However, it is more similar to Pokémon GO! in terms of the capture style when capturing Pokémon.

Similar to Pokémon GO!, you flick the pokéball towards the pokémon to catch them. Instead of using the touchscreen to do this, you can either use the switch's joycons using a throwing motion or by using the gyroscope to line up the pokéball then pressing the A button to throw the pokéball.

However when battling a trainee, you have to fight using turn-based attacks similar to the original games.

I think that including both the capturing style from Pokémon GO! is a great idea, as previously catching a wild pokémon took a lot of time due to this being a turn-based battle. Having the trainer battles being turn-based allows more of a diffentiation between capturing pokémon and battling with pokémon and gives you more of an incentive to complete the pokédex.

In both games the pokédex looks very similar as it is intended for the same purpose. You are also able to transfer pokémon you have caught in Pokémon GO! to Pokémon: Let's Go! which adds a real world element to the game. This isn't nessecery to complete the pokédex in Pokémon: Let's Go! however it gives the player the option to play the game in a different way.

It would be really good to add a real-world element to the game I am going to create as this would make the game more interesting.
