Ocado Visit & Site Tour

We visited Ocado in Hatfield and went on a tour of their offices.

Me, Anja and Ollie waiting to collect our visitor's passes

I received a lanyard pass and was registered on the tour.

We were spoken to by two members of the Ocado Retail team who gave us an introduction about Ocado and what they do as a business.
Ocado describe themselves as a tech company that sell groceries instead of just an online supermarket. Ocado sell their technology to other companies, e.g. their unique mechanical grid system which organises the warehouse. Ocado support local companies, farmers and supplier as they believe this is important. They held a Britain’s next top supplier competition where they the winner would be contracted to supply their products to Ocado for 6 months. As they aren't a usual supermarket, Ocado find that they don't have true competitors that they can use as a benchmark.

Streams of work
Retention - Retain already existing customers with offers and vouchers.
Supply & Media - Ocado provide space on their website for other companies to sell their products through their platform and they will skin it for them.
Acquisitions - Sharing Ocado's message so that more and potential customers are engaged.
Competitive - Researching rivals and campaigns that stand up against theirs which they will match.

Ocado has many departments and two sides of the company, the tech side and retail side.
We were shown around Ocado retail as that's were the marketing department worked.

Ocado Retail mainly includes:
  • Creative
  • Marketing
  • Analytics - Click through rates and conversions
  • Trading assistants and buyers
Daniel, Ocado's Senior Art Director, showed us around the design studio.
He explains that a lot of Ocado's photography is taken top down and they prefer to use a clean minimalistic look. To gain the look that the vans have, they use macro photography on the fruits.
He explained that Ocado try to promote healthy food and more people will want to buy their food.

These are some social media banners, each one shows what that banner would look like in different sizes for different platforms. Ocado have a seasonal colour besides the green that they use depending on the season. For example, the below banners have a purple feel due to being Ocado's Autumn colour.

A cupboard was filled with props that Ocado use when photographing their products.

Stuart, showed us the work he does on a daily basis where he will edit and touch up the photos that are shot in the studio as well as create graphics for social media. He showed us a gif of a cake which was used to promote a competition. He did this using the Photoshop timeline and stacking the layers of the cake; which created this moving image effect.

While on our tour we spoke to Andrea and Ben who work on designing and developing Ocado's website. We got to see the projects that they had been working on and Ben showed me how he created a parallax effect on one of the webpages.

On the wall was some print-outs that showed Ocado's branding, colour palette and fonts.

By attending this site visit, I received a stamp.
